Procedures following enrollment
You have now submitted your enrollment documents and are no doubt wondering what happens next and when you will be notified that you have enrolled successfully.
This page will guide you through the next steps. First, however, you need to clarify whether you have applied to Universität Hamburg for the first time or whether you have enrolled or been enrolled previously—this includes enrollment in the Studienkolleg, junior studies, or a pre-semester preparatory course.
Have my documents been received?
Send your documents using the form linked in your letter of admission. After submitting the form, you will receive an automatic confirmation of receipt by email. When you have received the confirmation, you can be sure that the form has been received by us. If you do not receive the confirmation, please check your spam folder. If you cannot find the confirmation there either, please contact us via www.uni-hamburg.de/studium
You can check the completeness of your documents yourself using the confirmation of receipt. The lower part of the comfirmation email contains the file names of the documents that you have uploaded. You can use these names to check the uploaded files on your private device.
I have never been enrolled at Universität Hamburg.
Provisional semester documents
Roughly 3–4 weeks after the enrollment deadline, you will receive provisional semester documents via post (public transport pass, student ID, new STiNE login details). A separate envelope contains a TAN list that you will need later to register for courses. Please note: Once you have been assigned a student ID number, you will NOT be able to access your STiNE account until you receive your new login details.
If you receive provisional semester documents, that means that we have accepted your enrollment application. Enrollment is deemed complete when we have received all of your enrollment documents and your semester contribution.
Exception: For international master’s programs with the earlier 15 February–31 March application period, provisional semester documents will be sent at the beginning of September.
Paying the semester contribution
Please log into STiNE using your new STiNE login details. The payment form for the semester contribution can be found under the “Dokumente” (Documents) tab— please pay this without delay.
Submitting documents later
If you have to submit documents for enrollment later, this can delay the issuing of your final semester documents and your certificate of enrollment. It is therefore in your own interest to submit the missing documents as soon as possible after the enrollment deadline.
We recommend submitting the documents by mid-October or mid-April at the latest. Otherwise we cannot guarantee that you will have the final documents after the preliminary semester documents have expired.
Please do not use the enrollment form again for subsequent submissions, but send the documents via www.uni-hamburg.de/submit-later
Permanent semester documents
If you have submitted all required documents correctly by the deadline (see the checklist: the link is provided in the notification) and paid your semester contribution, you will receive your permanent semester documents before your provisional semester documents expire.
As soon as your proof of enrollment is displayed under the documents tab in STiNE, you can be assured that we have sent your permanent semester documents.Note: If your documents are incomplete or you pay your semester contribution only shortly before your provisional semester documents expire, enrollment will post-date the expiration date of your provisional semester documents.
Enrollment is complete when you receive your permanent semester documents.
Additional information about master’s programs
If you have not yet submitted your final record of grades for your bachelor’s studies, you will not receive all semester documents (no proof of enrollment!); you have until the end of the first semester of your master’s program to submit your final record of grades and your withdrawal certificate to the Application and Admissions Team (Team Bewerbung und Zulassung).
You can submit an application for the federal student loan scheme when you receive an acceptance letter(see www.studierendenwerk-hamburg.de for information in German about the transition from a bachelor’s to a master’s program: Förderung beim Übergang vom Bachelor zum Master).
I am now or have previously been enrolled at Universität Hamburg.
The information here also applies if you have been enrolled in a Studienkolleg, junior studies program, or pre-semester preparatory course; it also applies if you took part in the UHHhilft program, the Open Study Program, or were an auditing student. In all above-mentioned cases, you retain your student ID number!
Provisional semester documents
If you have withdrawn for at least 1 semester between your previous studies and your new studies, you will receive new provisional semester documents. Roughly 3–4 weeks after the enrollment deadline, you will receive provisional semester documents via post (public transport pass, student ID). A separate envelope contains a TAN list that you will later need to register for courses. Exception: For international master’s programs with the earlier 15 February–31 March application period, provisional semester documents are sent at the beginning of September.
If you are still enrolled, you will not receive provisional semester documents. As soon as you have converted your enrollment, you will see your new degree program in STiNE under the tab “Fächer-/Bereichswahl” (Courses/Electives). You do not have to formally withdraw; within Universität Hamburg, enrollment is converted automatically.
Your application for enrollment is deemed approved when you receive your provisional semester documents and/or your new degree program appears in your STiNE account. Enrollment is deemed complete when we have received all of your enrollment documents and your semester contribution.
Paying the semester contribution
Transfer your semester contribution by the deadline using your student ID number, even if no payment slip is available in your STiNE account (for more information about the contribution, account details, and deadlines, see www.uni-hamburg.de/semesterbeitrag.)
Tip: If you were enrolled at Universität Hamburg the previous semester, wait until you see the new degree program in STiNE under “Fächer/Bereichswahl” (Courses/Electives) before re-enrolling! Make sure, however, that you re-enroll by the deadline. This means that you should pay 2 weeks before the end of the re-enrollment period at the latest, even if the new degree program has not yet appeared in your STiNE account.
Transition from bachelor’s to master’s program
If you have not yet submitted your transcript of records from your bachelor’s program, stay enrolled in your bachelor’s program; we will issue your semester documents accordingly. You have one semester to complete your bachelor’s program. You do not have to provide proof that you have completed your studies; as soon as your faculty has recorded that you have completed your studies, you will automatically be re-enrolled in the master’s program. You can submit an application for the federal student loan scheme when you receive an acceptance letter (see www.studierendenwerk-hamburg.de for information in German about the transition from a bachelor’s to a master’s program: Förderung beim Übergang vom Bachelor zum Master).
If you submitted your final record of grades for the bachelor’s program when you enrolled, you will automatically be enrolled in the master’s program and will receive proof of enrollment on the master’s program.
Please note, as well, that you will be starting your master’s program in the first semester; accordingly, you need to comply with the first-semester registration period.
Changing your subject or starting in a higher semester
There may well be an overlap between your semester re-enrollment for the previous program and enrollment in the new one; in this case, you may receive semester documents for your previous program. Don’t panic: We will update your proof of enrollment as soon as the enrollment details have been changed. You will see your new degree program in STiNE under “Fächer-/Bereichswahl” (Courses/Electives).
We will not issue a new semester public transport pass or semester ID. You can use your proof of enrollment for exams/tests and the like. Please note that if you are changing subjects and starting in the first semester, you must comply with thefirst-semester registration period.I put a foreign address in my enrollment application.
We will send you an email with your new STiNE login details and a TAN list. In STiNE you will find your student ID number and further information on paying the semester contribution. If you have given us a foreign address, you will not receive any semester documents, as these are not sent to adresses abroad. However, you do not need these documents abroad. As soon as you have arrived in Germany, please inform us of your new address via www.uni-hamburg.de/studium. Your address will then be changed in STiNE and the documents will be sent to you.
