Forum Citizen Science 2024
The Forum Citizen Science 2024 took place from 9 to 10 October and brought together the German, Austrian and Swiss citizen science community in Hamburg - a new record with 250 participants! This year, the University of Hamburg was the host and cooperation partner of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin and Wissenschaft im Dialog. The Team Co-Creation & Engagement, primarily responsible for local organization, was able to highlight strong Hamburg-based initiatives, offering the regional citizen science scene a platform for high-quality scientific exchange, political debate, and international visibility.
During the pre-conference program at JUPITER on October 8, the projects funded by the University of Hamburg's Knowledge Exchange Fund 2023 (PDF in German) were showcased, alongside the award winners from the "mit:forschen" program "Auf die Plätze – Citizen Science in Deiner Stadt." Project partners and conference participants had the opportunity to network informally and connect in a relaxed atmosphere.
The main conference, under the patronage of Science Senator Katharina Fegebank, offered two days of intensive exchange through a variety of formats including traditional lecture panels, interactive workshops, short stories, a poster session, and a methods atelier. The numerous contributions from the University of Hamburg highlighted the diversity of co-creative research activities across a wide range of disciplines. The event provided an opportunity for the university and its metropolitan region to The organisation of the conference enabled the University of Hamburg and its metropolitan region to present itself as a dynamic "hotspot" for participatory research with civil society in many dimensions and to highlight the importance of co-creation and engagement for the academic landscape.
On the evening of October 9, as part of the forum, the prestigious "Wissen der Vielen – Research Award for Citizen Science," funded by the BMBF, was ceremoniously awarded. Following the laudations, Dr. Claudia Mendes from the Team Co-Creation & Engagement engaged the award winners in a panel discussion with Dr. Alexander von Vogel, State Councillor representing the Hamburg Authority for Science and Research. Dr. von Vogel emphasised once again the topicality and relevance of participatory research for Hamburg's urban society.
