University of Hamburg's mission statement
Following one and a half years of intensive discussion, the University of Hamburg adopted guiding principles in Summer Semester 1998. These describe our goals and the University’s self-image as a “gateway to the world of science and scholarship.” Project groups pursue steps towards 6 global goals for individual areas of responsibility within the University:

Gateway to the world of science and scholarship
The University of Hamburg, with is many subjects and educational opportunities, sees itself as a gateway to the world of science and scholarship.
Open-minded and international
The University of Hamburg reflects the city’s tradition of openness and tolerance, international cooperation, and the universality of academic endeavor.
Academic freedom
The University’s research contributes to the free development of science and scholarship and its teaching and programs to realizing the right to academic education.
Educating responsible citizens
The University sees it’s educational responsibility as cultivating expertise, judgment, and the ability to make sound arguments on the basis of science and scholarship. It strives to be a place for lifelong learning and a public forum for cultural, social, and political exchange.
Funding early career researchers
Due to its range of subjects and the quality of its work, the University of Hamburg has increasing responsibility for funding early career researchers.
Socially responsible academic freedom
University members wish to fulfill University duties by combining research and teaching as well as general education and vocational training in line with the principles of academic independence. They want to contribute to the development of a humane, democratic, and just society and give women and men equal access to education and academia.
Bridging scholarship and practice
Aware of its social responsibility, the University of Hamburg sees itself as a go-between between research and practical pursuit, guided by the principles of ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable development.
Center for academic expertise in the north
The University of Hamburg is a central institution in Hamburg’s higher education and research landscape, contributing to a diverse network of cooperation partners in science, scholarship, and practical fields and to regional and supra-regional development.
Research benefiting people
The University offers a broad range of academic services and health care at the cutting edge of research, benefiting people and fulfilling public and social duties.
Interdisciplinary cooperation
The University develops and imparts scientific methods, findings, and qualifications through the interdisciplinary cooperation of its members and bodies. Cooperation among its members is based on information, transparency, democratic participation, and the willingness to solve conflicts.
