Placement for class registration / 'Big Placement Test'
The placement test for German will take place online and will be available from 20 February. Please be aware that you will need your admission for STiNE (B-Kennung). The placement test is offered on our platform OpenOlat. It will take 50 mins to take the test. It is not possible to adjourn or intermit nor to repeat the test. You will find a technical instruction and the password for the test in this pdf-file.
In case you do not have a STiNE admission get in touch with our office. Please inform about your student-ID-number (Matrikelnummer) und please attach the letter of acceptance (Zulassungsbescheid) of our university.
If you wish to receive an evaluation of your language ability and CEFL level prior to taking the placement test, please take this online test:

Taking the placement test is obligatory (unless you have obtained a standardized proof of proficiency as mentioned above).
You will receive your result automatically after taking the test.

Please note that the Sprachenzentrum offers courses on CEFL levels B1-C1 only. You are required to have these levels to be able to participate in our courses. You may only sign up for the level you reached in the placement test.

Language Placement for Courses
The placement test for German will take place online and will be available from 20 February until the end of the registration phase. Please be aware that you will need your admission for STiNE (B-Kennung). The placement test is offered on our platform OpenOlat. It will take 50 mins to take the test. It is not possible to adjourn or intermit nor to repeat the test. In this pdf-file you will find a technical instruction and the password for the test. Here you will find the placement test.
Note that some courses will use video conference tools, therefore a stable internet connection is desirable.
In case you do not have a STiNE admission get in touch with our office. Please inform - if available - about your student-ID-number (Matrikelnummer) und please attach the letter of acceptance (Zulassungsbescheid) of our university.
Start of courses
DSH Intensive course:
The test preparation course for test candidates „Fit for DSH (B2/C1)” takes place from 13-24 March 2023, 12pm-17pm.
Intensive courses summer semester 2023:
The intensive courses in summer semester 2023 will take place in the weeks of 13-17 March and 20-24 March 2023.
Semester courses summer semester 2023:
Regular semester courses begin on 11 April 2023 and end on 15 July 2023.
Course Registration
1. Submit Proof of Language Proficiency
In order to register for courses, you are required to submit proof of your CEFR German language proficiency level.
There are two possibilities for submission of your proof of proficiency:
· You take the placement test at Sprachenzentrum. The placement test can be taken online on the virtual platform OpenOlat. You find more information and instructions how to take the test here.
· You have already obtained a standardized certificate (e.g. Goethe-Institut-Zertifikat, TestDaF, Telc etc.)? Then please send a PDF scan of your certificate using our contact form or to sz@uni-hamburg.de.
2. Online course registration via STINE
Course registration is only possible once proof of level proficiency is submitted (see point 1. above).
Register for desired courses via STiNE.
· You find our courses in the course catalogue in STiNE following this path: Extracurricular courses ► Semester ► University Language Center (SZ) ►Deutsch als Fremdsprache
Exceptions:
It is impossible to register via STiNE (e.g. in case you have not received your STiNE password or documents yet)? Then please register via our contact form.
· State your name, matriculation number, titles and numbers of your desired course(s) and the reason why you were not able to register via STiNE.
· You will then be registered manually.
3. Course Participation
Once the courses appear in your course list in your STiNE study account, your registration was successful.
You will then receive further information concerning course details, digital platforms, passwords etc. from your course instructors prior to the start of your courses.

Registering for classes after the 2. registration phase
It is no longer possible to register for our classes in the first session
If you have not been able to register in the 2. registration phase because you have no STiNE Log-In yet, because of problems with STiNE or because all classes were full, please contact us.
