TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language
What is TOEFL?
The TOEFL iBT (internet-based test) is a standardized, internationally recognized proficiency test of English as a foreign language. It serves as official proof of your English language skills for the purposes of applying for study programs in English-speaking countries. It is also sometime required for job or visa applications.
As of November 2018, the Language Center of the University of Hamburg now offers the TOEFL test to students and staff of the university.
What is tested?
The TOEFL test consists of four parts: reading, listening, writing, and speaking:
Section 1: Reading (60-80 Minutes, 36-56 Questions) – Reading from passages of text and answering questions about the content
Section 2: Listening (60-90 Minutes, 34-51 Questions) – Listening to excerpts from lectures or class discussions and answering questions about the content
10 minute break
Section 3: Speaking (20 Minutes, 6 Tasks) – Speaking into a microphone about familiar topics and discussion of provided audio or written material
Section 4: Writing (50 Minutes, 2 Tasks) – Writing about familiar topics and a response to provided written and audio material
Each section contains a maximum of 30 points, for a total 120 possible points. Different organizations and courses of study have different score requirements, so make sure that you know what score you need to achieve.
Why is it useful?
The TOEFL is proof of your English skills all around the world, for university applications, job hunts, and visa processes.
How long does it take?
The TOEFL test takes about 4 hours and is finished on one day. The results are available quickly, normally after just ten days.
Paper certificates are also available. If you require one, please note this when you register.
How much does the test cost?
As of December 1st, 2018, TOEFL costs around 250 US dollars, although the amount is subject to change depending on testing date. You will be informed about the costs on the ETS website while registering.
Upcoming Testing Dates
Due to measures to contain the Corona virus, there are currently no in-person testing appointments of the TOEFL. Should you need to take the TOEFL, there is a special Home Edition offered by the test provider ETS that allows you to take the test at home. Check their website for further information: www.ets.org/toefl/special-home-edition
We are hoping to be able to offer in-person testing dates again in the fall (subject to the then prevailing Corona regulations). The next scheduled dates are:
