What is the EIT, what are KICs?

In 2008 the European Institute of Innovation and Technologies (EIT) was founded by the European Union, in order to promote a sustainable growth and increase the competitiveness of the EU. The work of the EIT is based on so called KICs (Knowledge and Innovation Communities). These are Independent knowledge and innovation communities that are supported by academia and the industry.

The KIC is Europe’s largest public-private innovation partnership focused on climate change, consisting of dynamic companies, the best academic institutions and the public sector. It is a highly integrated, creative and specialised network, aligned on peak performance. In cooperation they inspire ideas, accelerate innovations and bring products as well as services to market maturity.

Since 2009 six KICs have been founded:

Climate change mitigation and adaptation (EIT Climate-KIC)
Information and Communication Technologies (EIT Digital)
Sustainable energy (EIT InnoEnergy)
Healthy living and active ageing (EIT Health)
Sustainable exploration, extraction, processing, recycling and substitution (EIT Raw Materials)
Putting Europe at the centre of a global revolution in food innovation and production (EIT Food)

2017: Competition for new innovation communities to be established in 2018: EIT Manufacturing and EIT Urban mobility announced!

The Climate KIC

The main purpose of the Climate-KIC is a sustainable and climate friendly society by initiation and funding of innovative projects. This projects have a large potential for major consequences in areas of climate protection and climate adaptation. Universität Hamburg is Affiliate Partner of the German Climate-KIC since 2009. The Climate-KIC has identified eight themes that represent specific challenges to address climate change mitigation and adaptation. All activities are attached to these specific challenges:

Urban Transitions: We develop the integrated, interoperable, scalable and replicable systemic solutions to underpin the carbon-negative, responsive, resilient cities of the future.

Sustainable Production Systems: Low-carbon value chains based on the circular economy and bio-economy are the future foundation of Europe’s industry.

Decision Metrics & Finance: Decision-makers, investors and high-carbon consumers are confident and committed to climate action, unlocking finance and driving the climate relevant economy.

Sustainable Land Use: Land use climate mitigation and adaptation functions strengthened through innovative tools and systems that articulate new value chains and contribute to green growth.
