With growing concerns about the normalization of racism and intolerance, PIASTA was hosting Awareness Weeks in 2024 at University of Hamburg to take a clear stand against racism and antisemitism, promoting diversity and tolerance.

PIASTA offers awareness trainings each semester. Join our workshops and learn what you can do to combat racism. Our diverse program will get you actively involved and connected with others!

Awareness Weeks

The image shows the text "recognize, understand, stop racism" and the dates "14 Oct – 30 Nov 2024" on an orange background.

Photo: Plan C. Kreativstudio

Over seven weeks, PIASTA hosted events both online and on campus, accompanied by the #UnbequemeRealitäten social media campaign. Many faculty members, student initiatives, and support services have also been involved!

Let yourself critically examine racism and reflect on how you might be contributing to racist structures. Together, we can recognize, understand, and stop racism.

You can find the campaign and lots more information here on our awareness website.

Our Campaign

Our Campaign

The image displays the text "You speak English really well" followed by "is not a compliment." The text is written in dark blue font on a light yellow background with a blue border at the top.

White Fragility

Just because something is meant to a compliment doesn’t mean it lands well. "White" people often don’t like being confronted with accusations of racism. In around 45% of incidents, the response is that the other person is “too sensitive.” This shifting of blame makes it harder to address racism.

See the racist realities (Rassistische Realitäten) study
The image shows the text "In 2023, there were around 993 registered racist incidents* in Hamburg." written in light pink on a dark red background. A green shape is visible at the top. Below the main text, a smaller note reads: "*These include threats

Downplaying Racist Experiences

Racism is often seen as a problem only on the far right, but it exists in every part of society—yes, even here in our own neighborhood. In the media, most attention is given to violent racism, leaving more everyday, subtle forms almost invisible.

See the monitoring relations in Hamburg (Monitoring Hamburger Verhältnisse) study
The image shows the text: "That's a lot of white men" is still the reality in academia – right here at our university, too." The text is written in purple on a light purple background with a wavy orange border at the top

Eurocentrism in Education

Socioeconomic and political inequalities have, for centuries, either blocked or limited access to universities for BIPoC. The result? BIPoC* perspectives are still underrepresented in academic spaces.

To this day, racist and Eurocentric structures persist in the content of what’s being taught.

Critical racism in teaching
The image shows the text: "Where are you really from?" is not friendly small-talk. The text is written in light gray on a dark green background with irregular yellow shapes at the top.

Othering

Often, people subconsciously assume someone’s origin based on their appearance. Many overlook the fact that Germany is a diverse society and have an unexamined idea of what a “real” German looks like.

Guideline: Sensitivity to racism in language use
The image displays the text "Our university has colonial roots." written in light blue on a dark blue background. The top of the image features a wavy green border.

Colonialism

Before the University of Hamburg was founded in 1919, the main building housed the Colonial Institute, where colonial officers were trained. For a long time, many academic fields remained influenced by colonial thinking. It wasn’t until 2014 that the Research Center for Hamburg’s (Post-)Colonial Legacy was established.

Hamburg (post-)colonial heritage
The image shows the text: "Looking for an apartment with a foreign-sounding name is almost impossible." written in dark blue on a light blue background. The top has a light purple border.

Photo: Plan C. Kreativstudio

Racial Stress / Unconscious Biases

People with non-German-sounding names often take longer to find a new apartment. Many aren’t even invited to viewings. This stems from unexamined biases that wrongly attribute negative traits to them.

See the racism in the accommodation market (Rassismus auf dem Wohnungsmarkt) survey
The image displays the text: "Racism doesn’t only start with open insults. Sometimes, it’s as subtle as your body language." written in light pink on a dark red background. The top of the image features irregular yellow shapes.

Photo: Plan C. Kreativstudio

Unconscious Biases / Microaggressions

Racism often shows up in biased behaviors—like grabbing your bag when someone who looks like an immigrant walks by. This unexamined behavior is still racism, even if it rarely shows up in statistics.

See the racism monitor (Rassismusmonitor)
