Program description
The MA in Jewish Philosophy and Religion fosters independent analytical approaches to original texts, critical reflection upon religious phenomena, and the development of creative solutions to complex questions in philosophy and religion. Thematically, it covers a broad range of core issues in Jewish philosophy and religion from antiquity to the present, with special emphasis on the early modern period. Linguistically, the key objective is to broaden and deepen students’ knowledge of Hebrew.
The program has an interdisciplinary focus: cooperations exist, among others, with the Institute of World Christianity and Religious Studies and the Institute of Philosophy at Universität Hamburg. It also maintains further cooperations with external institutions, namely with the Jewish community and the Institute for the History of the German Jews (IGDJ). The Maimonides Centre for Advanced Studies—Jewish Scepticism (MCAS—JS) has also worked together with the Institute since October 2015. It offers students further attractive opportunities through regular visits by international guest scholars.
Career prospects
The master’s program leads to a variety of professions, including academic research, teaching, and librarianship (particularly in the areas of manuscripts and special collections). Further opportunities exist within museums, NGOs and other national and international organizations, political education and training facilities, and in journalism and publishing.
Program structure
The four-semester modular program consists of a core area, an advanced area, a free elective area, and a final module. English, German, and Hebrew are the languages of instruction.
- Core area: two language modules (Hebrew I and Hebrew II) and two themed modules (Jewish philosophy and Jewish religion)
- Advanced area: methodology of working with sources, history of ideas, and text analysis
- Free elective area: Students select classes offered both by the Institute and other institutes according to their individual interests.
- Final module: master’s thesis, colloquium, and oral examination
