Program description
Increasing religious and cultural pluralization of our society has led to many occupations now demanding skills in interreligious dialog and the facilitation of communication between religious and non-religious groups. The MA in Religions, Dialog and Education aims to impart communicative skills and analytical expertise relevant to interreligious dialog. Students acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of interreligious communication, an area of increasing importance for those working and researching in multireligious contexts.
The program aims to familiarize students with different religions—Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Alevism—in their historical, geographical, philosophical, and political plurality, and to integrate this knowledge into the practice of intercultural communication. Students each specialize in one world religion/belief.
The master’s program is endemic to the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Hamburg. The MA's interdisciplinary, interreligious, and interconfessional approach makes the program unique in Germany.
Career prospects
In addition to an academic career (doctoral studies, research) graduates may pursue a variety of careers in youth work, further education, advisory services, adult education, development cooperation, media, or publishing.
Program structure
The program is divided into two areas:
- Required area (Semesters 1–2) including the subject-specific modules:
