Program description
The program is expired. A new M.Sc. program in Wood Science (in English) will be offered from winter semester 2019/20.
Wood is used worldwide for fuel, construction, and as a material. The most important renewable material, it is increasingly being used for entirely new applications. The Center for Wood Sciences in Hamburg–Bergedorf brings together wood-related expertise from a range of disciplines, from biology and chemistry to technology, ecology, and commerce. The program imparts in-depth knowledge of all areas of wood science, and courses are complemented with field trips within Germany and abroad. Close cooperation with the research facilities of the Thünen Institute means students have countless opportunities to specialize. A high level of support is offered throughout the program.
Career prospects
The versatility of this program is reflected in the professional prospects open to graduates. Career opportunities exist in the wood industry and wood trade, research and teaching, as well as the wood materials, paper and pulp industries. Wood scientists are employed in the timber trade and related industries. They also work as wood science experts and consultants.
Program structure
The program is divided into three areas. In the first semester students are introduced to aspects of wood science in a lecture series (mechanical wood technology, wood biology, chemical wood technology, and wood and forest management). This is followed by a two-semester-long elective area enabling individual specialization. Students are then free to choose from the following required elective modules:
- wood biology (wood anatomy and physiology, wood damage and protection, molecular biology of renewable materials, biochemistry and biotechnology, environmental technology in the wood and paper industry)
- wood physics (solid wood technology, wood composite technology, corporate planning and management, wood in the construction industry)
- wood chemistry (pulp and paper, characterization of wood and wood components, uses of wood and annual plants in biorefineries, wood and annual plant biopolymers)
- wood / forest management, forestry production (wood quality, wood harvest and transport, marketing for wood products, market research and sales planning)
