Program description
The MA in Sociology gains its special profile from three components. Two core areas of the discipline are covered at an advanced, international level, namely sociological theories and quantitative and qualitative methods of empirical research. The program moreover focuses on the mediation of practical, research-based expertise and skills.
In a two-semester research module, students acquire in-depth knowledge of all phases of the empirical research process: the development of a research question and the theoretical conception of a research design, the formulation of hypotheses and operationalization, the selection and application of appropriate quantitative and qualitative methods, the analysis of data, and the written examination of results in a research report.
Furthermore, specialization modules covering a broad range of topics enable students to develop their own individual academic profile. They are encouraged to participate in team studies and supervised tutorials in order to learn how to communicate their research findings to both experts and the broader public, and to develop their dialog and team skills.
Career prospects
Two main career routes are open to graduates:
- The research-oriented program prepares students for doctoral studies and a career in academia.
- Qualified sociologists are also sought-after experts for leading roles in public administration, associations, and the private sector (e.g., in personnel departments), urban planning departments (city and regional planning), or as advisors in public relations and market research.
Program structure
- Two basic modules: These cover different aspects of sociological theories in addition to qualitative and quantitative methods of social research.
- Two-semester research module: Extends the methodological and theoretical knowledge gained during the basic modules with the emphases and content from the specialization modules. Students attend project seminars on qualitative and quantitative methods of empirical social research.
- Specialization in a specific field of sociology—free choice from the following options:
- business and organizational sociology
- theoretical approaches to international comparative sociology
- scientific theory and advanced quantitative and qualitative methods
- theories on the relationship between society and the environment, corporate greening, and global climate change
- methods of theory analysis with interdisciplinary and discursive references
- cultural sociology
