Program description
The English-language Master of Arts in Tibetan Studies imparts knowledge of the language, culture, and history of Tibet and the neighboring Tibetan cultural region spanning from early Tibetan civilization through to the present day. Offered at only a handful of German universities in this format, this program is research-oriented, and aims to facilitate critical reflection of theories and methods as well as independent formulation and consideration of problematic areas within the discipline.
Key program aims include developing and deepening students’ knowledge of historical and cultural developments in Tibet and providing insight into current areas of academic debate in tibetology. Students are required to spend a semester abroad at either a European partner university or a university in the Tibetan-speaking region.
