Program description
Informatics plays a role in all areas of life nowadays: in work, communication, health care, and leisure. This key interdisciplinary subject is decisive to society and industry. The MSc in Informatics allows students to specialize further in the material covered in the bachelor’s degree program and to acquire further academic skills. Students focus, for example, on aspects such as complex networked systems, intelligent systems and robotics, or IT system architecture and design.
The research-oriented program teaches students to make independent use of informatics methods and in particular to act responsibly with regard to the impact of technological developments. Graduates are qualified to pursue a further academic qualification (doctoral program is currently in planning).
Career prospects
Graduates enjoy excellent career opportunities across a diverse range of fields. These include research and development at universities and research institutes, teaching, software development and programming, database management, system and network administration, data protection, IT consulting, company consulting, distribution, application support, marketing, market research, controlling, and information research. Further fields include telecommunications, the automotive industry, or finance and insurance sectors.
Program structure
The MSc in Informatics consists of a general required area (incl. the module on formal principles of informatics III and a project), a required elective area, a specialization, an elective area, and a final thesis.

Admission requirements:
- a consecutive bachelor’s degree in informatics from the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences at Universität Hamburg or a comparable degree from a German university OR
- a bachelor’s degree in another subject with a curriculum comparable to the BSc in Informatics in the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences at Universität Hamburg
- proof of proficiency in German, as appropriate
