Program description
Academic analysis, the capacity for critical reflection, and mediation of the latest knowledge is not only important in scientific research and teaching, but is also becoming increasingly interesting for the services sector and in companies. The MA in Labor, Economy and Society (Economic and Sociological Studies) prepares students for academic work in the fields of sociology and economics in a variety of social sectors. It offers a research-oriented program in which students are not only able to deepen their knowledge of sociology and economics, but also to apply the methods of quantitative and qualitative empirical social research as well as of empirical business research. A particular feature of the master's program is the focus on the interdisciplinary field of socioeconomics, which addresses the social consequences of economic activity as well as the social influences on economic activities.
Career prospects
The program prepares graduates for careers in social fields that rely on academic analysis, the capacity for critical reflection, and mediation of the latest knowledge. This includes tasks within strategic consulting, media, international organizations and associations, foundations, NGOs, parliaments and political parties, political consulting, public administration and institutions, research institutes, and academic continuing education.
Program structure
The program comprises seven modules:
- theory
- methods
- research
- socioeconomics specialization: socioeconomics of labor/markets, globalization, sustainability/welfare, state, integration
- final module
The socioeconomic research module forms the focus and includes the learning workshop held in the second and third semesters, for which a new interdisciplinary research topic from the fields of economics and sociology is selected in every course.
The program focuses on learning through research, independent investigation of a topic, conception and realization of an independent study (ideally leading to the master’s thesis), in addition to the practice of research, moderation, and presentation techniques.
The learning workshop is led by tutors from sociology and economics respectively and is devoted to a broad topic area, enabling meaningful consideration of both disciplines through small-scale independent research projects.
