Program description
The MA in Political Science is offered in cooperation with the GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies and the Faculty of Law. It combines the strengths of many Hamburg institutions in political science in fields such as comparative governance, international policy, regional studies, and political theory. Within the core curriculum and two specializations, students take a theoretical, empirical, and practice-oriented approach to consider complex governance issues both inside (regional, sub-national, and national levels) and outside (supra-, trans-, and international levels) of states. A research module enables individual research under qualified supervision.
Two specializations are offered within this research-based program:
- comparative and regional studies (VRS): comparison of political systems with consideration of regional characteristics and supranational structures
- international political theory (IPT): focus on international policy and political theory with emphasis on theoretical and historical analysis, explanation, and normative evaluation of cross-border political processes and institutions
Career prospects
The program qualifies students for positions of responsibility in key sectors of society, such as political parties, associations, the media, business, or administration. Students are alternatively able to pursue an academic career (e.g., doctoral studies).
Program structure
The program comprises:
- core curriculum—introductory lectures on the two specializations in addition to modules on international governance and politics and power in modern world systems, covering perspectives from international relations, political theory, and the history of ideas
- specialization
- comparative and regional studies—modules on comparative and regional studies and methods of empirical social research
- international political theory—module on international political theory and classes on social theory or international law
- master’s thesis
- free elective area
