Program description
The English-language master's program "Molecular Plant Science" (MoPS) is designed as a research-oriented program that builds on basic knowledge of molecular biology. Graduates have acquired advanced knowledge of molecular biological, physiological, biochemical and imaging methods for research on plants and are able to apply them independently. They have the ability to formulate hypotheses based on problems and to design experiments to investigate these hypotheses based on their knowledge of the methods. In addition, they have extensive experience in conducting experiments, as well as in error analysis and troubleshooting and can present and critically discuss test results in a scientific context. The graduates have gained extensive practical experience in university research and got to know alternative career paths. They are familiar with the current discussion about molecular biological methods and can contribute to the discourse in the social context through their specialist knowledge.
Career prospects
The program qualifies graduates for a career in both academic research and leading roles in the biotechnological, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, plant breeding, plant protection agencies, chambers of agriculture, and national research centers. Graduates can also go into scientific publishing or journalism. Further career opportunities exist in government bodies, non-profit organizations, and environmental organizations. Biodiversity research, patent law, and copyright law offer graduates a particularly diverse array of jobs.
Program structure
The master’s degree consists of four semesters with a total of seven required modules and two required elective modules:
- Semester 1:
- Introduction to the molecular plant sciences (seminar and lecture)
- Introduction to lab methods A–C (three courses)
- Semester 2:
- Ethics in biology (seminar and lecture)
- Lab methods (practical project in a research group)
- Semester 3:
- Scientific work / professional experience (lecture and practical course)
- Lab methods (practical project in a research group)
- Semester 4:
- Master’s thesis
