Program description
The Graduate Studies in Molecular Biology program is offered by the Center for Molecular Neurobiology Hamburg in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine. The interdisciplinary, research-based, and practice-oriented program combines disciplines in the natural sciences and medicine. The program encourages students to develop advanced interdisciplinary research skills in the sciences and prepares them for careers in industry, research, and teaching. It is of particular interest to those wishing to pursue a career in academic biomedical research or the biomedical research industry. Students acquire theoretical knowledge of the disciplines through lectures and seminars. Parallel to this, they work on a research project which may either form part or all of a doctoral dissertation, or be assessed as a component of the Aufbaustudium.
English is the working language on this program.
Career prospects
Molecular biologists primarily work in research and development at universities and in industry. There are also opportunities to work as a molecular biological expert in a variety of organizations, for instance in government environmental authorities. Careers in the life sciences, biotechnology, bioengineering, and nanotechnology are some further options for graduates.
Program structure
The graduate program runs over four semesters:
- At the start of the first semester, students present either their intended research topic or research already undertaken.
- A research project progress report must be submitted at the end of the second or start of the third semester.
- Students complete two internships at the end of each of the first three semesters in order to gain further insight into the various different techniques in molecular biology.
- A final colloquium at the end of the fourth semester provides students with the opportunity to present the findings of their research project. Students also submit a short written report (max. 6 pages) in publication format.
