Handprint activities at the University of Hamburg

The University of Hamburg is intensely involved in handprint activities to foster sustainable developments in studies, teaching, and knowledge exchange. In this, the University of Hamburg is actively committed to implementing Hamburg’s master plan for sustainable development education.

Through these diverse handprint initiatives, the University of Hamburg is making a significant contribution to promoting sustainability in academic studies and teaching. The targeted development of programs and teaching formats, as well as active participation in networks and collaborative efforts underscore the University’s commitment to a sustainable future.

Our sustainability activities

Interdisciplinary certification program for sustainability

An interdisciplinary certification program for sustainability began in the Fall of 2023 and will be expanded in collaboration with University Vice President Natalia Filatkina. This program aims to raise awareness of sustainability issues across various disciplines and equip them with the necessary skills.

Establishing Open Educational Resources (OER) for the twin transformation

Open Educational Resources for the twin transformation are being developed in conjunction with the OER Lab and the Chief Digital Officer (CDO). These resources are intended to facilitate and encourage access to knowledge about the interconnection between digital and sustainable transformation.

Program development for sustainability-focused startups

The Circular Impact Factory is being established in collaboration with LMU, the Eberswalde University of Sustainable Development (HNE) and the University of Wuppertal. The program aims to support sustainability-focused startups and innovative business ideas in the circular economy.

Participating in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) networks

The University of Hamburg is active in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) networks, such as the national platform and the ESD forum. Through this participation, the University is contributing to supporting and further developing ESD at a national level.

Expansion of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teaching formats with a focus on sustainability

The University plans to expand teaching formats that take an interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary approach to sustainability issues, particularly in conjunction with external partner organizations. This includes certificates and microcredentials as well as a collaboration with the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) for a joint certificate.

Creating international teaching formats with a sustainability focus

The University of Hamburg is planning to create international teaching formats such as Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) which focus particularly on sustainability. These formats are intended to foster international exchange and provides students with a global perspective on sustainability.
