As part of community management at the University of Hamburg, various measures are therefore being implemented to build and foster an active and engaged community dedicated to sustainability.

A central component of this is open participation formats, which enable all members of the university to actively participate in sustainability initiatives. These include open plenary sessions and idea competitions, as well as support for tiny house projects. These formats provide a platform for exchanging ideas, developing projects, and fostering collaboration across departments.

In addition, Sustainability Working Groups & Labs are being established to address various aspects of sustainability. These working groups and real-world labs enable students and researchers to work on dissertation, habilitation, bachelor’s, and master’s projects that address specific sustainability topics and develop solutions to real-world challenges.

To foster a vibrant culture of sustainability in research, student life, teaching, and administration, various engagement and participation formats are being developed. These include regular events, the use of social media, and the creation of informational resources to keep the university community informed about current developments and opportunities for participation.

Close collaboration with the Green Office and the AStA (student council) makes it possible to support and promote student activities in the area of sustainability. This includes providing resources, supporting events, and collaborating on projects. Equally close collaboration and integration with UHH Marketing GmbH, the State and University Library, the Student Services Organization, and the open spaces on campus creates new opportunities for joint projects.

Plans also include hosting engagement events at various university locations, such as the Student Service Center (SCB), as well as organizing sustainability workshops and idea competitions in collaboration with the faculties and departments. These measures are intended to further advance the integration of sustainability topics into all areas of the university.

Another goal is the expansion of the “Sustainability Village” on the university’s central campus. This project aims to create a space where students, faculty, researchers, and staff can come together to exchange ideas, develop projects, and implement sustainable solutions. By creating a physical space dedicated to sustainability, the visibility and accessibility of sustainable initiatives at the university will be further improved.
