Sustainability Reporting

Humanity faces major challenges in the realm of sustainability. The University of Hamburg has a particular responsibility to play its part in tackling these challenges and working towards preserving a planet fit for life – for current and future generations.

To provide transparency regarding its progress and efforts, the University of Hamburg publishes details on its activities and achievements as part of its sustainability reporting. In the following you can find all the reports from previous years.

Climate Action Report (2019 – 2022)

The first university-wide Climate Action Report 2019 – 2022 (PDF) was published by the Sustainability Office in 2023 and focusses on the monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions from 2019 to 2022. The report outlines the current situation as well as the university’s planned transformation process. The greenhouse gas accounting was conducted based on the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. On this basis, emission reduction targets were derived, and transformation pathways were outlined in the report.

Sustainability Report (2015 – 2018)

The Sustainability Report 2015 – 2018 (PDF), published in 2019, was the first report that was produced by the university itself. Much of the report’s content follows directly from the two previous reports. The reporting period covers January 2015 to autumn 2018. In its structure the report is based on the framework of the German Sustainability Code (Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitskodex (DNK)) for universities. In addition, the University of Hamburg has officially aligned itself with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, which were adopted in 2015.

Sustainability Report (2011 – 2014)

The University of Hamburg’s second sustainability report from the year 2016 was also created by the student initiative oikos Hamburg. The Sustainability Report (2011 – 2014) (PDF) was prepared in close collaboration with the center for a sustainable university (KNU), which operated until 2019, and with the UHH administration. The report illustrates the development of areas relevant to sustainability at the University of Hamburg for the timeframe of 2011 to 2014 and is based on the indicators of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Particularly innovative is that the students devised their own indicators for the area of teaching, as this area has not yet been covered by traditional indicator systems.

Sustainability Report (2010 – 2011)

The Sustainability Report 2010 – 2011 (PDF) is the first sustainability report of the University of Hamburg and was published in 2012 by the student initiative oikos Hamburg in collaboration with the then President [VS1] [f.2] of the University, Prof. Dr. Dieter Lenzen. The report provides an overview of the university’s sustainability performance from 2010 to 2011 and aims to inform about sustainable developments and to further advance them.
