Whole Institution Approach Plus

A central component of our sustainability strategy is the "Whole Institution Approach." This means that all members of the university, regardless of discipline or status group, are actively involved in the development and implementation of our sustainability strategy. Through this inclusive approach, we promote broad engagement and ensure that diverse perspectives and expertise are incorporated into our sustainability initiatives. We go even further by including organizations that, although partly formally external, are closely connected with the University of Hamburg in practice—for example, the Student Services, the Hamburg State and University Library, or the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE).

Sustainability Management as a Driver of Innovation

Our sustainability management serves as a driver of innovation and a platform for dialogue. Through active exchange and collaboration within the university and with external partners, we promote the development of innovative solutions and create an environment in which sustainable ideas and projects can thrive. Our goal is to improve not only our own processes and structures through sustainable management but also to act as a role model and source of inspiration for other institutions and society as a whole.

At the University of Hamburg, we understand sustainability as a comprehensive and integrative concept that involves all areas and members of our institution. By linking digital and sustainable transformation and applying a holistic approach, we create the foundation for a sustainable future and position ourselves as a leading institution in the field of sustainability.

Research and Scientific Infrastructure

In research, sustainability is a central topic. Research centers and excellence clusters work on innovative solutions for global challenges. The Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN) and the Center for Sustainable Social Research (CSS) are two outstanding examples of interdisciplinary collaboration in sustainability research. The Excellence Cluster "Climate, Climatic Change, and Society" (CLICCS) examines the complex interactions between climate and society and develops strategies to address climate change.

Study and Teaching

Sustainability is also firmly anchored in study and teaching. Sustainability topics are an integral part of many degree programs and curricula. The University of Hamburg offers a wide range of courses and modules that give students the opportunity to engage deeply with issues of sustainable development. Projects and initiatives led by students promote practical learning and commitment to sustainability.

Climate Neutrality, Biodiversity, and Circular Economy in Operations

The University of Hamburg is actively committed to climate neutrality and has set ambitious goals (climate neutrality Scope 1 and 2 by 2030) to reduce its CO2 emissions. Measures for energy savings, the use of renewable energy, and innovative mobility concepts are just some of the strategies implemented to make the university climate neutral.

In addition, the university is committed to protecting biodiversity and promoting a circular economy. Green campus areas and the renaturation of sites contribute to the preservation of biological diversity. Promoting a circular economy, in which resources are used efficiently and waste is minimized, is another key focus in operational areas.

The University of Hamburg sees itself as a driver of innovation and cooperation in sustainable development. Through close collaboration with international partners, business, politics, and civil society, synergies are utilized and transformative solutions are developed.
