Biodiversity
Our Measures and Activities
The University of Hamburg (UHH) is actively committed to designing its campus and its locations in a way that is in harmony with nature. Various stakeholders are involved in this area, including the Sustainability Office (SO), the Green Office (GO), and the AStA (student council). While the AStA represents students and the SO involves staff, the GO serves as a bridge between the two.
To implement specific projects, a working group (AG) structure was established, allowing several working groups to participate in various aspects of campus design. The SO’s AG Support team assists these groups in their work.
Biodiversity Working Group
The Biodiversity Working Group is committed to protecting and promoting biodiversity on campus. Its initiatives include, among other things, the installation of birdhouses and insect hotels, as well as regular planting campaigns. The working group also offers workshops as part of events and field trips. Furthermore, the working group is linked to the SO’s biodiversity management program.
Campus Greening Working Group
This working group was founded by the AStA and works closely with the SO, the working group structure, and the GO. One of its key projects is the so-called “Concrete Flower Bed Project,” which contributes to the greening of sealed surfaces.
“Wurzelwerk” Working Group
The “Wurzelwerk” working group is dedicated to designing natural gardens, particularly at VMP (Von Melle Park) and soon also in Bahrenfeld. These gardens serve as biodiversity hotspots, educational spaces, and places for people to gather. The group emerged from the AStA and has already been incorporated into university courses. Additionally, workshops are organized for the group as part of university events.
