Program description
This program is no longer offered, applications are not possible anymore starting WS 2019/20. Instead, from 2019/20, the master program Technomathematik will be offered in English language.
Industrial Mathematics focuses on technical topics in the field of mathematics. The master's program in Industrial Mathematics is offered jointly by the Department of Mathematics at Universität Hamburg and the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg. It has a strong research profile consisting of mathematics (60%), informatics in engineering (20%), and technology (20%). The MSc program in Industrial Mathematics, which is highly international, has close ties to the Erasmus Mundus project Mathematical Modeling in Engineering: Theory, Numerics and Applications (MathMods). It takes into account professional demands and developments and has an interdisciplinary approach. Students acquire the skills and methodological knowledge required to pursue academic work and to apply and assess scientific findings.
Career prospects
Graduates of the Industrial Mathematics program work with engineers on simulation problems and the optimization of dynamic processes. These could include, for example, geometrical modeling or the simulation of wind resistance for bodywork designs. The program's emphasis on research prepares graduates for careers in academia as well as in industrial research and development. Industrial Mathematicians also work in the field of software development and as consultants in the fields of information technology, data processing, biotechnology, automobile production, and electronics.
Program structure
This master's program consists of mandatory courses, mandatory electives, free electives, and a final thesis.
- First and second semester: in-depth study in the field, mandatory courses (Modern Methods of Optimization and Approximation, Partial Differential Equations, Computational Science I + II).
- Third semester (mandatory electives): Students may choose from the following areas (one per field) for in-depth study:
- mathematics (courses offered by Universität Hamburg): Optimization, Differential Equations, or Numerics;
- engineering
- and informatics (students may take all advanced courses in the master's programs in engineering and informatics at TU Hamburg-Harburg).
Additionally, students may choose elective courses from all modules in the master's program offered by the Department of Mathematics at Universität Hamburg as well as all modules in the master's programs offered by the TU Hamburg-Harburg.
- In the fourth semester, students complete a master’s thesis. The master's thesis must be completed in one of the three in-depth areas: Optimization, Differential Equations, or Numerics.

Special admission requirements for this degree program:
Applicants to the master’s program must meet the following criteria:
- They must have a bachelor's degree in mathematics (supplemented by coursework in technology) from Universität Hamburg.
- Alternatively, they must have a bachelor's degree in engineering (with a concentration in mathematics) from the Technical University Hamburg-Harburg or
- from a comparable program at another university or a bachelor's degree in a related mathematics-technical field providing that the applicant can prove a minimum number of credit points for coursework in mathematics or engineering.
- Exceptions for other degrees are possible.
- Applicants must be proficient in English.
