You can tailor your studies to your interests and delve deeply into topics that are important to you. Many degree programs are unique in Germany, and through the free elective track, you can supplement your studies with courses from other disciplines. Special certificates also allow you to focus on interdisciplinary areas such as entrepreneurship, sustainability, or intercultural competence.

We collaborate closely with many partner universities worldwide and offer you various opportunities to study abroad for a semester or complete an internship. But there are also plenty of opportunities to study internationally right here in Hamburg.

Practice- and Research-Oriented
Even while you’re still a student, you can participate in research projects and gain insight into potential career paths. The fact that we always view research and teaching as inseparable is an integral part of our guiding principle “Teaching.” This document defines what constitutes good teaching for us. Specifically, this means that your professors conduct their own research on the very topics they teach.
Participatory
Our university is Germany’s first democratically founded institution of higher education. And in everyday university life, too, there are numerous opportunities for you to have a say and get involved—both within and outside the University of Hamburg.

Studying here offers you many opportunities to get involved in society and at the university. For example, through the Green Office, which focuses on sustainability, or the Refugee Law Clinic. The “UHHengagiert” network brings together research, practice, and civic engagement.
