Residence permit

Graduates of a German university can apply for a Residence Permit for Job Seeking. The residence permit is valid for a maximum of 18 months and allows you the unrestricted right to work.

When you have found a permanent position, apply for a residence permit that includes a work permit. Depending on the type of employment, you might qualify for the EU blue card. Contact the Hamburg Welcome Center in good time to find out about the requirements.

If you would like to continue with doctoral studies at the University of Hamburg, you can either apply for a residence permit for work as a member of the academic staff or a residence permit for the purpose of studying.

If you would like to continue with your studies (master’s degree or doctorate) in Germany, apply again for a residence permit for the purpose of university study after you enroll.

Please note: A residence permit for the purpose of university study is limited to a total of 10 years. For subsequent doctoral work, another 5 years is generally granted.
