Once you have successfully completed your degree, you will need to inform your local foreigners’ department. Graduates of a German university can apply for a residence permit to search for a job. The residence permit is valid for a maximum of 18 months and allows you the unrestricted right to work.
When you have found a permanent position, apply for a residence permit that includes a work permit. Contact your local foreigners’ department in good time to find out about the requirements.
If you would like to continue with your studies (master’s degree or doctorate) in Germany, apply again for a residence permit for the purpose of university study after you enroll. Note that a residence permit for the purpose of university study is limited to a total of 10 years. For subsequent doctoral work, another 5 years is generally granted.
