This workshop explores the effect of how we communicate on the well-being of young people in our increasingly diverse societies. We discuss how linguistic barriers and different styles of communication can affect a person’s ability to understand and act on health information. Drawing on examples from school settings, we examine how we can make complex health concepts more accessible to everyone, regardless of their cultural or linguistic background.

This interactive workshop invites students, academics, and professional staff to collaboratively explore the potential of service learning as a pedagogical approach. Moving beyond a purely assistential perspective, the session frames service learning as a means for fostering critical engagement and contributing to meaningful social transformation. After a brief introduction to core concepts and real-world examples, participants will work in interdisciplinary groups to identify societal challenges and design community-based strategies aligned with academic programs. The session emphasizes co-creation, critical reflection, and practical applicability, including the definition of learning outcomes and anticipated social impact. Participants also examine ethical and implementation challenges (particularly those related to power relations, reciprocity, and sustainability) and share their ideas through rapid pitches. The workshop fosters dialogue across roles and disciplines, aiming to inspire actionable, context-sensitive service-learning initiatives that promote both educational development and transformative social change.

This session is designed for early-career researchers and students, as well as staff involved in career support at EUGLOH’s partner universities. It offers participants a space to reflect on professional aspirations and exchange perspectives. The workshop explores diverse career-development pathways for individuals passionate about global health, both within academic institutions and in sectors such as international organizations, NGOs, policymaking, and industry. Participants engage with peers navigating different trajectories and gain practical insights into skills, networks, and strategies that can open doors in and beyond academia.

EUGLOH and the European Student Card Project have a shared vision: seamless mobility and easy service access on arrival at a host university. The EUGLOH project eduTAP enables this vision with an interoperable technical solution that provides students, staff, and professionals of the higher education community immediate access to essential physical services (canteens, libraries, printers, and much more) when visiting a campus. This workshop explains the backgrounds, vision, and how eduTAP can help offer services in an easy way to incoming short-term mobility guests.

This panel discussion explores how teaching practices shape professional identity formation in future professions such as medicine and education. It critically examines the role of language, pedagogical formats, and the hidden curriculum in influencing learners’ developmental trajectories. Particular attention is given to formative encounters that profoundly shape professional self-concept and to strategies for fostering reflective, identity-oriented learning environments. Adopting an interdisciplinary and student-centered perspective, the panel integrates insights from both medical and educational sciences to advance innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

Students are the upcoming opinion leaders within their future professional environment. Thus, student health management is not only a support service but also a strategic element of sustainable and resilient campus development and an important contribution of the higher education sector to a healthy future for society in general.

This panel examines how it can strengthen student success, inclusion, and overall well-being while contributing to higher-quality learning environments. It also explores how European universities can work together to address shared challenges, exchange effective practices, and develop joint frameworks that support and include students as active contributors in this field beyond national contexts.

This panel explores the evolving relationship between citizens and the scientific community in shaping health systems. Moving beyond traditional models of knowledge production that exclusively focus on academic perspectives, it foregrounds the reciprocal exchange between lived experience and scientific expertise as a cornerstone of effective global health responses. In this vein, the panel interrogates the concept of scientific citizenship, emphasizing the responsibilities, rights, and capacities of individuals to critically engage with scientific processes and evidence in an era marked by complex health challenges.
Through inputs on exemplary cases, the session highlights both opportunities and tensions inherent in co-creation, such as issues of trust, exclusivity and inclusivity, and epistemic authority. Ultimately, the panel seeks to advance strategies that embed meaningful citizen participation into research and policy to strengthen health resilience at local levels.

Hamburg offers a distinctive context for examining the interplay between urban and rural health, shaped by its metropolitan structure, peri-urban spaces, and maritime environment.

This session is designed as an interactive platform for exchange, learning, and networking within EUGLOH, bringing together students, researchers, and practitioners from diverse disciplines and countries.

The contributions address four interconnected dimensions: First, a case study of a neighborhood at the urban-rural interface highlights how spatial and social dynamics shape health opportunities and inequalities. Second, the maritime perspective explores health and healthcare provision on ships, addressing challenges in mobile and isolated contexts. Third, the session emphasizes healthcare as a shared societal responsibility, presenting community-based and cross-sector approaches. Fourth, the session takes us to rural areas in Arctic Norway, where distributed education programs are possible due to collaboration between university, local communities and health personnels.

By fostering interdisciplinary exchange and collaborative learning, the session aims to strengthen networks across the EUGLOH community and stimulate joint approaches to addressing health disparities. Hamburg thus serves as a living lab for innovative, transnational public health education and practice.

Learning Objectives: Participants will (1) analyze urban-rural health dynamics using Hamburg as a case study; (2) compare healthcare challenges across stationary and mobile settings; and (3) be introduced to distributed education programs in Arctic and (4) identify opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and network-building within EUGLOH.

In this workshop, we showcase our research on the intersection of immersive media and health. We present and discuss outcomes from our previous joint summer schools, highlighting the insights gained over the years. Additionally, we explore the implications for future collaborations and demonstrate how this ongoing partnership has influenced and shaped our research results.

The Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) in Hamburg brings together structural biologists, virologists, and microbiologists to investigate the molecular mechanisms of infections. CSSB’s mission is to understand the structure, dynamics, and function of pathogens and their host interactions. In this context, we use, provide, and develop cutting-edge technologies. Our fundamental research seeks to enable the identification of targets for interventions, contributing to pandemic preparedness and population resilience against pathogens.

To explore complex biological systems, we actively seek collaborations with research groups aiming to test structural hypotheses in vitro or in vivo, as well as with labs that wish to characterize their systems in greater structural detail using the state-of-the-art infrastructure available at CSSB. Our interdisciplinary teams and open-access facilities are ideally suited to translating structural observations into mechanistic understanding and to complementing infection biology with precise molecular views.

Whether you study virus-host interactions, microbial pathogenesis, or protein assemblies in health and disease, CSSB offers a collaborative framework to deepen structural insights and connect functional biology with atomic-level resolution. We invite interested scientists to join us in visualizing biological complexity across scales and to build new partnerships at the interface of structure and infection biology.

Join us for an inspiring session on life science start-ups and entrepreneurship hosted by PIER, the strategic partnership of the University of Hamburg and the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY). We explore the dynamic world of business creation in the life sciences across Europe. The session features four startup founders and innovation experts from Hamburg, Novi Sad, and Lund, who will share their journeys from idea to impact. In four engaging talks, they will discuss their biggest challenges, key learnings, and the opportunities they encountered while building their businesses—or supporting others in doing so. Following the talks, a 30-minute panel discussion will offer the opportunity to explore the speakers’ experiences further and to open the floor to questions.

Despite being entirely preventable, rabies is one of the deadliest infectious diseases, with a case fatality rate close to 100% once symptoms appear. Alarmingly, nearly 40% of those affected are children under the age of 15.

Rabies Rampage is a board game designed to raise awareness of this critical zoonotic disease by helping players recognize signs and symptoms of rabies, avoid risky behaviors, and respond appropriately to exposure-risk situations. In the game, players take on the role of rabid animals whose objective is to spread the virus and cause a global outbreak. Throughout the gameplay, participants encounter diverse questions, scenarios, and challenges that encourage reflection and learning. Following the game, a plenary exercise engages learners in applying their acquired knowledge outside the “magic circle,” reinforcing core information aligned with the learning objectives.

This workshop will shed light on the development process of this game within the EUGLOH Living Lab: Serious Games as a Global Health Education Tool, illustrating how playful approaches can support global health education and engage the community.
