Core Research Area Neurosciences and Cognitive Systems
Research in this core area is mainly conducted at the Hamburg Center of NeuroScience (HCNS). The Center bundles neuroscience research in Hamburg with a focus on molecular mechanisms and clinical applications. More than 400 researchers collaborate closely for a deeper understanding of brain processes and new therapies for neurological and mental disorders.

State-of-the-art computational techniques and infrastructure pave the way for developing innovative methods such as high-resolution imaging, and recordings of brain activity. Using specially developed electrodes, optogenetics, and high-precision neuroimaging of various species helps us gain precise insights into how the brain works. We aim to improve healthcare and the society of tomorrow through a deeper understanding of basic brain mechanisms as a foundation for new, mechanism-based therapies
