"How to conduct fieldwork": first workshop with the doctoral students
14 July 2025, by Olga Lopopolo
From 14 to 18 July 2025, the research unit hosted its first workshop at the University of Hamburg dedicated to fieldwork. Over five intensive days, we took part in a variety of interactive sessions, including hands‑on simulations, practical exercises, and guided discussions.
For many of the PhD students involved in the project, this was their first experience preparing for fieldwork in their respective countries, and the workshop offered a space to reflect on expectations, challenges, and emotions linked to entering the field for the first time. The Principal Investigators enriched the programme by sharing their own field experiences and offering concrete suggestions for navigating both methodological and personal aspects of research.
The workshop also addressed key issues related to data processing and storage, ensuring that all fieldworkers are equipped with the necessary tools and practices for responsible, ethical and effective field research. The event marked an important step in building a supportive and well‑prepared research community within the research unit.
