University of Excellence

Strengthening regional research cooperation

Universität Hamburg—University of Excellence is expanding its manifold research cooperation in Hamburg. Its main organ for doing so is the Partnership for Innovation, Education and Research (PIER PLUS). Initially conceived as a cooperation between Universität Hamurg and DESY, PIER PLUS now involves over 16 partner institutions and is being expanded continually. In the context of PIER PLUS, partner institutions associate and facilitate cooperation for their researchers based on their research profiles.

Annual application rounds based on research profiles and cross-cutting topics inspire interdisciplinary research and lay the groundwork for long-term cooperation (seed projects). Universität Hamburg—University of Excellence also plans to expand cooperation in northern Germany.

“Cooperation Benefits All Partners”

One reason Universität Hamburg, northern Germany’s largest research institution, was named a University of Excellence was in recognition of its role as a flagship university. Dr. Elisabeth Hettig, whose position was created specially for this task, explains how things are going.

“There are more viruses in the sea than stars in the universe”

Marine biologist Dr. Luisa Listmann from the Plankton Ecology and Evolution research group at Universität Hamburg is conducting research in collaboration with a colleague from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon GmbH. Seed funding for research is aimed at supporting these kinds of collaborative projects by research institutions in the greater Hamburg region.
