Students with disabilities
The University of Hamburg offers various central advice and support services for
- prospective students,
- applicants,
- students, and
- doctoral researchers
with long-term disabilities and illnesses (e.g., hearing, sight, or speech disabilities; musculoskeletal disorders; chronic somatic or psychological illnesses; and specific neurodevelopmental/cognitive impairment).
Office for Students with Disabilities
We provide advice and support for students with long-term disabilities, such as chronic diseases, on all matters related to
- preparing for university,
- applying, and
- studying.
We often receive queries about hardship and the availability of reasonable accommodations during admission to and enrollment in bachelor’s, Staatsexamen (state examination), and master’s degree programs; options for flexible course planning, course load, and examination requirements; taking leaves of absence and (re)entering the program during periods of illness; campus accessibility; and the provision of personal or technical support.
Our office also oversees the Betty Hirsch Raum—a computer workspace at the University of Hamburg for students with disabilities housed in the State and University Library Carl von Ossietzky—and the academic support for deaf and hearing-impaired students (Servicestelle zur studienorganisatorischen Unterstützung gehörloser und hörgeschädigter Studierender) in cooperation with iDeas.
