Program description
The International Master of Arts program in Ethiopian Studies, which is taught entirely in English, focuses on the language, history, and literature of Ethiopia. This focus includes both the oral and written traditions of Ethiopia and Eritrea. Using comprehensive methodological approaches, students learn how to use primary sources independently, analyze texts in Ethiopian from linguistic and etymological perspectives, and put these texts into historical context. This is a two-year master's program in which students who have already learned an African language in a bachelor's program can deepen their skills or in which they can acquire basic language skills in an additional African language. Students are also expected to spend a semester abroad. Close cooperation with the Hiob Ludolf Center for Ethiopean Studies, where students may also work, is a special feature of this program.
Career prospects
A master's degree in Ethiopian Studies qualifies graduates to conduct university-level research, or work in the fields of interpreting and translating, art and culture management, proofreading and publishing, media and communications, and tourism.
Program structure
This two-year master's program consists of mandatory courses from the first to the fourth semester as well as mandatory electives and free electives. The curriculum includes:
- modules spanning the first and second semesters: Methods in Ethiopian Studies and Linguistic History of Ethiopia (both mandatory), one of three language modules (mandatory elective, dependent upon prior knowledge of Amharic, Hausa, or Swahili), and free electives.
- a semester abroad or the modules Linguistic Communication and Knowledge and Medial Aspects of Knowledge Traditions in the third semester.
- a final module (colloquium, master's thesis, oral exam) in the fourth semester.
