Aarti Gupta (Wageningen University): "Anticipatory Governance of Novel Technologies: The Case of Solar Geoengineering"
Frank Biermann (Utrecht University): "Planetary Crisis and Plurilateral Politics: Global Governance in the Age of Trump"
Aarti Gupta is Professor of Global Environmental Governance at Wageningen University, The Netherlands, with a background in political science, international relations and science and technology studies. Her research focuses on accountability, transparency and equity in global environmental and climate governance, as well as the challenges of anticipatory governance of novel technologies. She is a co-initiator and currently co-leads an academic initiative consisting of more than 600 scientists calling for an International Non-Use Agreement on Solar Geoengineering, for which she was awarded the 2026 International Studies Association Social Impact Award. Aarti has also been in the leadership of the international Earth System Governance Research Alliance from 2018 – 2025 and was co-chair from 2023-2024. She holds a PhD from Yale University. In addition to her academic pursuits, Aarti Gupta has also worked for the United Nations Development Programme in New York, Oxfam-Novib in The Hague, and Transparency International in Berlin.
Frank Biermann is a political scientist and professor of Global Sustainability Governance at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. His research examines how institutions and governance systems shape political responses to planetary crises and human-driven transformations of the earth system. In 2006, Frank founded the Earth System Governance Project and served as its first chair until 2018. His current work focuses on establishing the International Panel on Earth System Governance, a new science assessment network. His contributions have been recognized among others with the Volvo Environment Prize, for “defining new pathways for international environmental governance in a period of global change”, and the Distinguished Scholar Award in Environmental Studies from the International Studies Association.
