Invention and Patent Service
From invention to patent exploitation
The Patent Service offered by Universität Hamburg supports you with your inventions, from idea to exploitation. To this end, we offer a wide range of services. We advise you on preparing your invention disclosure and put you in contact with experts from the patent exploitation agency (Patentverwertungsagentur, PVA). Together, we develop an exploitation plan and also support you administratively during the patenting process.
Before you can exploit your invention, you will go through three phases. The Invention and Patent Service is on hand to assist during all phases. Click on the User Journey icons to learn more about these three phases and the services we can provide during each.
User Journey – inventions and patents
Do you have an invention, but you don’t know whether your idea is patentable and how exactly you should proceed? Then the Invention and Patent Service at Universität Hamburg is your first professional contact.
Patenting an invention is regulated in the German act on employee inventions (Gesetz über Arbeitnehmererfindungen, ArbnErfG). In order to ensure a smooth and expedient process, it is important to consider a few aspects. If you have any questions about your invention disclosure, the further procedure, and/or support services, contact the Knowledge Exchange Agency.
In the case of inventions, it is particularly important to share information and ideas with you (i.e., the inventors), as well as to conduct a thorough search in patent databases. For this reason, Universität Hamburg cooperates with Hamburg’s professional service provider—the patent exploitation agency (Patentverwertungsagentur, PVA)—to support researchers during this process. Together with the PVA, the Invention and Patent Service of the Knowledge Exchange Agency supports you with all the necessary expertise related to technology and patent law.
The Invention and Patent Service offers you this comprehensive support so that you can focus on the technological development of your invention. Based on the joint discussions and the research conducted, the PVA makes an assessment (written statement), which is then used as the basis for the further procedure.
In the protection phase, we decide together with you based on the PVA’s written statement whether applying for a patent is the best option. If this is the case, a patent attorney will be commissioned to take over the necessary application processes at a patent office.
They will prepare the patent application in close cooperation with the PVA and the team of inventors. To protect your invention, the patent application is usually filed with the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (Deutsches Patent- und Markenamt, DPMA) or the European Patent Office (EPO).
Together with the PVA, the Invention and Patent Service at Universität Hamburg draws up an exploitation plan. During the exploitation process, we look for and contact potential partners who might be interested in exploiting your invention.
In this phase, exploitation of intellectual property rights must be considered on an individual basis. There is no standardized procedure for this. Hence we work with you and the PVA to develop a tailored exploitation plan that takes into account all relevant factors for the most successful outcome possible.
