Central Committee for Ethics in Security-Relevant Research (ZKEF)
The University of Hamburg has set up a Central Committee for Ethics in Security-Relevant Research (Zentrale Kommission für Ethik und sicherheitsrelevante Forschung, ZKEF) to foster responsible research work in areas related to security. Security-relevant research includes work that risks endangering human dignity, life, health, property, or the environment. The ZKEF offers higher-level advice and creates awareness of ethical and security-related challenges in research. It fosters communication, further education, and information exchange between faculties, without getting involved in specific, individual cases.
The responsibility for individual decisions lies with the subject-specific commissions within the faculties. Researchers retain decision-making responsibility.
The ZKEF is made up of the heads of the faculty commissions as well as the vice president for research.
