Research prizes for early career researchers

The Karl H. Ditze Prize is awarded for outstanding final examinations and dissertations in the humanities and the Department of Education.

Karl H. Ditze Prize

To commemorate the life and work of Dr. Joseph Carlebach (1883–1942), Universität Hamburg awards this prize to young researchers for outstanding scholarly contributions on Jewish history, religion, and culture. Joseph Carlebach was the last chief rabbi in Altona and Hamburg until his deportation to Riga in 1941.

The Young Climate Scientists Award honors especially successful bachelor’s and master’s theses. The award is given for final theses written at Universität Hamburg that focus on climate topics in the natural sciences, the humanities, and the social and economic sciences.

The German Research Foundation awards a prize for young researchers to honor outstanding achievements. The prize is intended to help recipients with their further academic career. The purpose is not to recognize just a dissertation but to honor prizewinners who have already developed their own independent academic profile after they have received their doctorate.

Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize (DFG)

The Sofja Kovalevskaja Award funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research is conferred by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to recognize outstanding research by especially promising young researchers from abroad. The award is intended to promote the development of an independent early career research group at a research institution in Germany with the aim of facilitating an academic career in Germany.

Sofja Kovalevskaja Award

The Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung awards this prize to highly qualified young teachers in higher education, providing earmarked funding for a designated period of time for staff and materials to improve the working environment.

Alfried Krupp-Förderpreis für junge Hochschullehrer

This prize is awarded to graduates in the geosciences who do not yet have a doctorate but whose previous work shows enormous scientific potential. Important selection criteria include further career plans and information about intended use of award funding.
