Program description
The Arab region includes Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Tunisia. The media frequently report on this region—mainly due to the conflicts that prevail there. Thus experts familiar with the intricacies of legislation in this region are much sought-after. The practice-oriented Master in Law and Economics of the Arab Region provides in-depth knowledge for economic analyses of the legislation with this unique geographic focus. Graduates are awarded a double degree:
- a law degree from the Faculty of Law at Universität Hamburg (Master of Law, LLM)
- an economics degree from the Faculty of Economics and Political Science (FEPS) at Cairo University (Master of Economics, MSc)
Career prospects
The interdisciplinary program focusing on the Arab region qualifies students for work in public organizations, multinational law firms, business consultancies, political parties, (non-)governmental agencies, and humanitarian organizations.
The four program graduates with the highest grades, moreover, have the opportunity to complete a one- to three-month internship at a business partner in Germany or Egypt, e.g., at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, the Egyptian Competition Authority (ECA), or the Egyptian Banking Institute (EBI).
Program structure
The program comprises three semesters, two of which are spent in Cairo and one in Hamburg.
- Semester 1: introductory phase with mandatory courses in mathematics, economics, and law; introduction to microeconomics, the fundamental economic and legal tools for the economic analysis of law; introduction to quantitative methods; introduction to the economic analysis of public law
- Semester 2: introduction to the economic analysis of competition and contract law; module on the economic analysis of international law
- Semester 3: modules on advanced topics within the economic analysis of legislation; methodology seminars; depending on the focus of research and teaching at Universität Hamburg, modules on the economic analysis of corporate or property law as required electives
