Program description
In the master's degree in teacher training in primary and lower secondary education I (MEd), students are able to choose either two teaching subjects from Group A, or one teaching subject from Group A and one from Group B:
- A: English, German, mathematics, music, Protestant religion, sport, Turkish, or visual arts and
- B: biology, chemistry, French, geography, history, informatics, physics, social sciences, Spanish, or work studies / technology.
Students must already have studied these two subjects during their bachelor’s degree as the master’s program builds on the bachelor’s degree for a type 2 teaching career according to the KMK (Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs).
Career prospects
The program qualifies students for a career in teaching at primary and lower secondary level – so generally in primary and district schools. Before taking up employment as teachers, graduates must complete the teaching practice period (Vorbereitungsdienst), which lasts eighteen months in Hamburg and concludes with the state examination (Staatsexamen).
Program structure
The master's degree in teacher training in primary and lower secondary education I comprises the following components:
- education, including subject-specific didactics
- two teaching subjects selected during the bachelor’s degree
- core placement
- final module with master’s thesis
Upon successful completion of the master’s degree program, students are awarded a Master of Education (MEd).
