Institutions and degree programs
The University of Hamburg’s 8 faculties (including the Faculty of Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf) offer numerous degree programs in different languages.

Student enrollment
In 2024, there were 10,307 first-year places offered, 422 of which were in the Faculty of Medicine. There were 45,566 applications for the abovementioned first-year places. Including doctoral researchers and students on a leave of absence, 42,707 students were enrolled in Winter Semester 2024/25, of whom 57.8% were female and 16.4% were from abroad.

Doctoral researchers
In Winter Semester 2024/25, there were 5,954 doctoral researchers enrolled, of whom 54.1 percent were female and 23.3 percent were from abroad.

In 2024, a total of 5,931 degrees were awarded at the University of Hamburg. Of these, 61.1 percent were female graduates and 10.8 percent were international students.
Doctoral studies and Habilitationen (postdoctoral qualifications)
In 2024, a total of 817 doctorates were awarded, of which 52.5 percent were completed by female doctoral researchers and 24.6 percent by doctoral researchers from abroad. In the same period, 45 <i>Habilitationen</i> (postdoctoral qualifications) were completed, of which 53 percent were completed by female researchers.

In 2024, there were 718 professors employed at the University of Hamburg. Of these, 35.8 percent were female, 83.4 percent were tenured, and 10.9 percent were from abroad.

The University of Hamburg is active in numerous and diverse research projects. In addition to the 4 clusters of excellence CLICCS, CUI, QU, and UWA, there are numerous collaborative research centers, research training groups, research groups, priority programs, junior research groups, ERC grants, and other projects funded by the EU, the BMFTR, and the state.
