Altogether 275 nominations for the Teaching Prize were submitted by students, teachers, researchers, and administrative staff of the University. Self-nominations were excluded. Dr. Susanne Koch from the Department of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences was honored in the category Inspirierende und Wirksame Lehre. Anton Sefkow from the Faculty of Law received the prize together with Lukas Musumeci from the Hamburg Center for University Teaching and Learning (HUL), and Marten Borchers from the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences in the category Mutige und Grenzüberschreitende Lehre. Prof. Dr. Parisa Moll-Khosrawi, lecturer at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) received the honor in the category Entwicklung und Erneuerung von Lehre.
“The introduction of the new teaching prize, which is awarded to University of Hamburg teachers only, has been an important step in honoring the passion, creativity, commitment, innovation talent, and courage with which our teaching staff strive for development. The large number of nominees shows that this University prize was overdue. It also shows the diversity of excellent teaching at our University and reflects a broad commitment,” said Prof. Dr. Natalia Filatkina, vice president for studies and teaching, at the awards ceremony in the atrium of the State and University Library.
“Valuable impetus for teaching”
“I offer my heartfelt congratulations to this year’s prize winners and shortlist finalists: They provide valuable impetus for teaching approaches that ignite enthusiasm in their students and inspire them to think for themselves to enable pioneering changes. I also want to honor all colleagues who used the academic and higher education teaching services at the HUL. These offers help us further enhance our teaching and support services,” said Filatkina.
The award ceremony was part of the Hauptsache Lehre event that was organized in collaboration with the HUL. Every prize category was worth €2,000. A jury, composed of the vice president for studies and teaching, 5 students, 2 teachers, and a HUL member, selected the awardees from the pool of nominees. The event also honored the achievements of teaching staff and student tutors who earned higher education teaching certificates from the HUL.
The University’s new teaching prize is awarded on top of the Hamburg Teaching Prize awarded by the Ministry of Science, Research, Equalities and Districts. Students from the participating universities only can submit nominations for the Hamburg Teaching Prize. The Hamburg Teaching Prize is worth €140,000 divided into 14 prizes worth €10,000. In 2024, 13 teachers from the University of Hamburg were honored for their outstanding seminars, modules, or exercises.
