This year, new students will once again have the opportunity to put together their own freshman goodie bags.

Starting college also marks the beginning of university life. On 9 October 2026, there will be a central welcome event on the Von-Melle-Park campus from 12 pm to 4 pm. All first-semester students can look forward to a varied program featuring important information and the traditional freshman goodie bag.

The Hello First-Semester Students event takes place in front of and inside the Audimax on the main campus and offers all first-semester students the opportunity to get to know the university better. At the Market of Opportunities, for example, numerous organizations present their work and services. Among those participating are:

• the Campus Center for all questions related to studying and the Center for Academic Advising and Psychological Counseling,
• the Department of International Affairs, which handles study abroad programs and supports international students,
• the Equity Unit, which includes the Family Office, Office for Students with Disabilities, and the Antidiscrimination Center,
• the ReAction project, designed to foster a sense of academic belonging through its programs to help students settle in at the university,
• the Studierendenwerk with its support services,
• the student job portal stellenwerk with its job board, and
• numerous other facilities and recreational activities on campus and beyond.

In a relaxed atmosphere, new students can gather information at booths, ask questions, and strike up conversations during activities. They can also take advantage of various services right on site—for example, apply for a library card or participate in the survey on starting college.

Put Together Your Own Freshman Goodie Bag

Of course, the traditional freshman goodie bags are back—and in the spirit of sustainability, you can fill them yourself. This means students can choose exactly what they really need. Options include goodies, giveaways, vouchers, and much more. The bags are available while supplies last. The event will be rounded out with music, raffles, dance flash mobs, and a pop-up booth from the Unikontor, offering high-quality merchandise such as hoodies, T-shirts, and colorful bags.
