Diversity
What is diversity?
Diversity more generally describes the variety of people and different groups of people in society. Diversity means that individual differences and commonalities exist in society and are thus also reflected in organizations like Universität Hamburg.
With regard to the characteristics within an organization, these can be gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, racist and anti-Semitic attributions, nationality and citizenship, religion or belief, disability and chronic illness, age, social origin and social status, family status, appearance, and professional prospects.
What does diversity management mean? And what does the University do?
Diversity management aims to ensure that diversity within an organization is recognized and valued and to promote the resulting potential. Barriers should be removed through diversity measures, and study and working conditions should be improvedto ensure an open-minded university culture for students and staff alike. Thus, diversity work extends beyond anti-discrimination activities and focuses on all persons.
Universität Hamburg considers equal opportunity to include not only gender equality but also diversity and the reconciliation of studies/work and family. Institutionally, diversity work is thus overseen by the Equity Unit. Diversity work is being carried out throughout the University. The Executive University Board, the clusters of excellence, the faculties, and various institutions work closely together to (further) develop and implement measures and advising services.
The Equity Unit coordinates the diversity process and—through the Diversity Round Table—diversity measures across units and departments.
The previous years’ most important steps, events, and successes in the area of diversity management at Universität Hamburg can be found in the equity milestones.
