Assessing your students in English: formats and strategies for oral and written exams

Considerations and decisions about how to assess your students become even more complicated when you are assessing them in a language which is foreign to you and/or to them. Tools and formats applied need to meet the learning aims of the course as well as accommodate the setting, your and your students’ (time) limitations, and address the inundation of academia with generative AI. Not many of us have enough time to hold oral exams for every student! In this workshop we will start with looking at exactly which skills and knowledge are the aims of the course and are to be ‘tested’, then consider how both the English language and generative AI affect the kinds of exam formats and tasks that make sense for your course setting. By the end of the day you should have some ideas in place about how you wish to assess your future students!
