Technology Platform Electron Microscopy

The technology platform Electron Microscopy, with a focus on materials science, conducts electron microscopic investigations for all institutes within the MIN Faculty of the UHH and for external clients. Electron microscopy is one of the fundamental methods to extensively investigate micro- to nanoscopic structures. It allows for the imaging of particles up to atomic resolution and the determination of, e.g., the chemical composition, elemental distribution of the sample with high spatial resolution, and crystal structure.

Which samples can be analyzed?

The applications of electron microscopy are diverse regarding the sample size, chemical composition, sample nature, research inquiries, etc. Various sample preparation techniques (including collaborative approaches) are available. Therefore, prior to the examination, a discussion should be held to elaborate on the sample and the research question, enabling the selection of the most suitable measurement method, and an appropriate sample preparation technique. It is important to consider that the quality of the measurement and the clarity of the results also (sometimes significantly) depend on the quality of the sample (purity, uniformity, etc.). Since electron microscopy provides highly detailed information from small areas of the sample, it is often helpful to conduct additional characterization methods that describe the entirety of the sample (such as XRD, SAXS, DLS, optical spectroscopy, etc.) beforehand.

For the actual measurement, only small sample quantities are required (e.g., around 10 µl solution for TEM grids). However, the sample amount should be manageable, especially in the case of solid samples.
