Over the course of two days, UC President and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Edward McCauley and his team discussed collaboration with President Prof. Dr. Hauke Heekeren and other UHH representatives, and visited Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld, among other locations.
In addition to Edward McCauley, Dr. Sandra Davidson, Provost and Vice President of the UC, and Buffy St-Amand, Senior Director of International Affairs, traveled to Hamburg to familiarize themselves with the university and the research landscape in Hamburg. During the visit, discussions will be held with the Hamburg University management as well as representatives from various faculties (Educational Science, Psychology and Human Movement Science, Mathematics, Informatics, and Natural Sciences), the clusters of excellence (CLICCS, CUI, QU, BlueMat), and at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE).
While the first day of the visit focused on the Von-Melle-Park Campus, the second day will feature a tour and discussions at Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld. During this visit, the delegation from Canada will also gain insights into the work of the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) and the startup scene in Hamburg (visit to Start-up Labs Hamburg GmbH).
Student exchange program is very popular
In discussions to date, areas for collaboration have been identified and synergies between the two universities have been highlighted. Opportunities to intensify cooperation in areas where the University of Hamburg already collaborates with the University of Calgary could include joint externally funded projects, such as applications under the EU’s “Horizon Europe” framework program.
The University of Hamburg maintains a university-wide partnership with the UC that also includes a student exchange program (central exchange since 2010), under which Hamburg students are exempt from tuition fees in Canada. The exchange opportunity is very popular among students at the University of Hamburg.
In recent years, the University of Hamburg has supported joint cooperation projects between the two institutions, including in the fields of educational science and the Faculty of Medicine. Since 2022, 177 co-authored publications have been released between the University of Hamburg and the UC, primarily in the fields of Medicine, Biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology.
