Discussion: How European do we want to become?
Discussion event on June 13, 2024 in Berlin
How do we find European responses to global challenges, particularly in security policy, and how do we implement them? What are the consequences of the European elections 2024 for the fragile balance of European identity and national interests? What is the state of resilience of the EU? And what do these questions mean in terms of the European science community and European science policy? What should be considered in times of new system rivalries regarding research security? What contribution can and should research make to European security in times of geopolitical crises?
These questions were discussed - shortly after the European elections - by the Member of the Bundestag, Chantal Kopf, the former German Foreign Minister and Chairman of the Atlantik-Brücke, Prof. Sigmar Gabriel, the Polish diplomat and current HIAS Fellow, Janusz Reiter, as well as Prof. Dr. Thomas Christiansen, a political scientist at LUISS University Guido Carli Rome. The discussion was moderated by Prof. Dr. Markus Kotzur, Professor of European and International Law at Universität Hamburg and Director of the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg.
They were all guests for the event hosted by the Hamburg Forum for Global Science and Policy on June 13, 2024 at the Representation of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in Berlin.
Greetings were given by Prof. Dr. Hauke Heekeren, President of Universität Hamburg, Dr. Alexander von Vogel, State Secretary at the Hamburg Ministry for Science, Research, Gender Equality and Districts (BWFGB), and Dr. Dorothea Rüland, Secretary General of the Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS).
The event was held in collaboration with HIAS, BWFGB, and the Representation of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in Berlin.
