Teaching/EducationWorkshop

The workshop "Teaching Principles for Assistants in Science Labs" is specifically
conceived for doctoral candidates who are in charge to manage the complex
responsibilities of supervising students in laboratory settings. This one-day program
provides essential teaching foundations crucial for effectively addressing the
multifaceted tasks of laboratory assistants. These teaching skills significantly
enhance the quality of instruction and are not only vital for an academic career but
also highly relevant for professional development as leading people in and beyond
academia.
Key topics include non-violent communication and empathetic engagement with a
diverse student body. Through individual and small-group activities, participants will
explore and develop strategies for activating and motivating students, as well as
discuss their practical application in teaching contexts.
The workshop features numerous practical case studies that will be discussed in light
of the concepts learned.
It also covers essential topics such as seminar facilitation techniques, conducting oral
examinations, understanding examination regulations, and addressing plagiarism,
including new challenges posed by generative artificial intelligence.
This workshop offers participants the opportunity to enhance their teaching practices
while recognizing that the role of a teaching assistant in lab courses provides a
valuable foundation for developing leadership and management skills.
