From 4 pm Friday and 2 pm Saturday, 5 stages will host a varied program, both outdoor and inside the heritage-listed Observatory buildings (Gojenbergsweg 112, 21029 Hamburg–Bergedorf)—providing entertainment for kids and grown-ups alike.
This focus this year is on musical diversity, ranging from classical chamber music to Gregorian chant, to jazz, to electro-pop. The festival will be largely presented by artists from University of Hamburg choirs and the orchestra, as well as other music creators from the region. Visitors can look forward to acts including Anahit Vardanyan, Rocket Men, Yousef Kekhia, and many more.
But the festival is about more than music: it seeks to make science accessible, to bring astronomy to life, and spark curiosity. The program includes tours through the domed buildings, talks with researchers, a science slam, scientific lectures, and, weather permitting, observing the night sky through the historic telescope. Earthly needs are catered for too, with food trucks, the local café and cool drinks.
Tickets for this stellar experience under Hamburg’s skies are available online or from the Observatory’s front office from €10 (concession from €7). Tickets can be purchased on the day from €15 (concession from €10) at the entrance.
The Sternstunden Festival is a cooperation project between Unimusik Hamburg, the Förderverein der Unimusik Hamburg e.V, and the Hamburg Observatory of the University of Hamburg. Support also comes from the ZEIT Stiftung Bucerius, the Claussen-Simon Foundation, and the Cluster of Excellence Quantum University as well as other funding partners.
