“Science and the City: Exploring Pathways for Global Health Innovation”—under this theme, the European university alliance EUGLOH will convene on September 15 and 16, 2026, at the University of Hamburg. At the alliance’s annual meeting, approximately 300 participants will gather to strengthen their collaboration in research, academic studies, teaching, and knowledge transfer.

The summit demonstrates how closely science and the city of Hamburg are intertwined—and how, through this alliance, innovative teaching and cutting-edge interdisciplinary research can have a societal impact that transcends boundaries. “EUGLOH shows what ten European universities can achieve together when they work across national and disciplinary boundaries and network with partners from the city, civil society, and the business sector. This is how knowledge turns into collective action. The fact that the summit is taking place in Hamburg reflects what we experience here every day: academia and the city belong together,” says University President Prof. Dr. Hauke Heekeren.

With the extension of funding from the European Commission for the 2027–28 period, the alliance is also setting its sights on further deepening this collaboration. “The EUGLOH Annual Summit is an exciting opportunity for the entire alliance—for students, researchers, staff, and leadership members—not only to look back on what has been achieved during the current funding phase but also to plan the next phase together,” says Courtney Peltzer-Hönicke, Head of the International Affairs Department.

In addition to the EUGLOH partner universities and the University of Hamburg (2026 presidency), Hamburg-based research, technology transfer, and business partners are participating, including DESY, Hamburg Invest, and Siemens Healthineers. For the first time, the University of Amsterdam is also attending the summit as a new EUGLOH member. On the Von-Melle-Park campus and at Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld, keynote speeches, workshops, panel sessions, and other innovative formats will foster international exchange on a wide range of topics—from service learning and entrepreneurship to student initiatives within the alliance.

A special highlight of the program is the “Serious Games as a Global Health Education Tool” lab, in which a Hamburg school class will also participate. There, students will be introduced to an educational game that playfully raises awareness of the risks of rabies and was developed in the EUGLOH Living Lab.

For UHH members, the “EUGLOH Hub” networking session will also take place on September 15, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in ESA West, Room 221. Here, all EUGLOH member universities will present themselves in an open format featuring booths, quiz questions, and interactive discussions. All interested members of the UHH community are invited to attend this networking session. No prior registration is required.
