In the recently published THE World University Rankings 2026, the University of Hamburg has gone up 7 places compared to last year. It is now ranked 125th out of 2,191 participating universities.
The ranking system evaluates universities on the basis of reputation surveys, university statistical data, and publication measurements. Since the THE World University Ranking in 2018, the University of Hamburg has risen 85 places and continues on its upward trajectory. Nationally, the University of Hamburg is also considered one of the best: since 2018, it has climbed 10 places and now ranks 11th out of 55 participating German universities. Last year, it ranked 12th.
The greatest strides were taken in the category Research Quality. In this area, the University of Hamburg made a significant leap from last year to 9th place, landing it among Germany’s 10 best. Internationally, it jumped 36 places to 176th place. In the category Research Excellence, the University earned 99 of 100 points. This ranking is determined by the number of University of Hamburg publications, which are among the 10 most cited academic publications in the world.
THE publishes the World University Rankings annually. Differently weighted indicators are used. The current rankings list 2,191 universities worldwide, of which 55 are universities in Germany.
