This semester, the General Lecture Series continues its tradition of discussing the big questions of our time: Many lectures focus on current challenges and developments and make scientific findings accessible to the public. Topics include war and peace, social change, cultural protest, and social cohesion. Among other things, the lectures explore how war and militarization affect societies, how people cope with conflict, and what role culture and music play in protest, identity formation, and political mobilization.
Another focus is on racism, discrimination, and social diversity. The lecture series Racism (and Critiques of Racism) in Academia highlights perspectives from racism research and examines their significance for research, teaching, and university administration. The lecture series Intercultural Education focuses on a society shaped by migration as well as linguistic and cultural diversity, while also addressing the challenges posed by racism and discrimination.
The political and social conditions shaping our lives are also addressed. Under the title Follow the Money, a lecture series examines the funding mechanisms of child and youth welfare and explores which societal priorities are reflected in public investments and budget cuts. The series Hamburg Under Administration: Administration as the Key to the City (and Its History) reflects on the role of administration in shaping social coexistence and uses Hamburg as an example to show how administrative structures and decisions shape people’s lives.
The lecture series Focus on Infectious Diseases provides insights into new approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases. The lectures under the theme Taming the Machine” explore the opportunities and societal consequences of artificial intelligence and shed light on the philosophical, ethical, and political dimensions of AI and digital capitalism. Many other lecture series offer insights into current research questions, highlighting the diversity of academic disciplines represented at the University of Hamburg.
Open to all interested parties
The events are aimed at students and staff at the university as well as the interested Hamburg public. They offer an opportunity to learn about current research, engage in conversation with experts, and discuss different perspectives.
All lectures are open to the public and free of charge. No prior knowledge is required to participate. The lectures in a lecture series are delivered by rotating speakers and do not build upon one another in terms of content. This means that attending individual lectures is also worthwhile.
